If you want to become a Slovak citizen as a person with Slovak heritage, here are six steps to follow:
- Find out whether you might be eligible. You can use our free Slovak citizenship eligibility tool that gives you approximate results in seconds.
- Find out what documents you will need. You can take our online course on how to apply for Slovak citizenship by descent on your own. The relevant pages of the Ministry of Interior are here.
- Collect relevant documents. You need to establish the chain of birth certificates between the relevant ancestors and yourself. Then you need to collect and potentially translate all these documents. In addition, you need further documents proving your personal status, standing, etc. You can take our online course to learn the tips and tricks for each of these documents.
- Apply either at Embassy/Consultate or in Slovakia. Once you are ready, you can file the application either in your country of residency, or in Slovakia. There are pros and cons to each of the routes. We explain them in our online course.
- Take the oath of Slovak citizenship. Once your applicaiton is succesful, you will be invited to come in person to accept the citizenship (either at Embassy/Consulate or in where you applied in Slovakia).
