Slovak authorities are currently deciding fairly quickly. The main bottleneck is the system of appointments at some Slovak embassies and the acquisition of documents at the preparatory stage.
As of August 2025, in our experience, the Ministry usually decides within several months. By law, the Ministry of Interior has a maximum of 24 months to decide on Slovak citizenship by descent.
However, the decision stage of the application process is only the last stage. Each applicant needs to factor in the time it takes for the following matters:
- Acquisition of documents
- Arranging translations
- Appointments
- Decision stage
Acquisition of documents
The time required for the acquisition of all the documents for Slovak citizenship by descent depends on your personal circumstances. Simpler cases, where there are obvious ancestors and their names and places of residence or birth are known, require fewer documents and tend to be quicker. In simple cases, we might acquire documents within weeks. In more complex cases, this might take months.
Arranging translations
Usually, we can arrange translations very quickly for you. For English-Slovak documents, the only limit is the delivery time (from your address to Kosice, and back; usually 2-3 days). However, some languages, such as Hebrew, might be trickier because there are very few official translators for those languages. In such cases, expect several weeks before you can receive your translations.
Some of the clients decide to arrange their own translations in their country of origin. This is usually not a good idea and tends to prolong the process.
Appointments
At the moment, some Slovak embassies are not able to cope with the surge of new demand for appointments (e.g., Washington). As a result, the next available appointment can be in several months. If you decide to work with us, we can help you to strategically book appointments when it is more or less certain that you will have all documents. This way, you will not miss the appointment and save some waiting time.
